About SafetyNet Index

An independent, curated directory of official government websites for U.S. social services programs.

What gets listed

A page is listed when it is the authoritative starting point for a program: the federal program home, the federal “find your state” page, a state agency home, a state program page, or the application portal that a state operates or contracts for. One best link per program per state. No duplicates, no news articles, no PDFs, no third-party guides.

Who can be listed

  • Federal agencies (.gov, .mil)
  • State and District of Columbia agencies (state .gov or .state.xx.us domains)
  • Official benefit portals operated for a state (for example a state's online application system), when the state agency links to them

Nonprofits, legal aid offices, counties and tribal governments are welcome to request a listing in a clearly separated “community resources” section, but they are not mixed into the government listings.

How links are checked

A “reachable” mark means the URL returned a successful HTTP response or its page was retrieved through browser or independent web review in our November 3, 2026 audit. This checks availability, not eligibility rules or every page detail. Some agency sites block automated requests or time out; those links are marked “check pending”. Recheck a destination before entering personal information.

Editorial independence

No advertiser, sponsor, or agency can buy a listing, change a listing, or remove one. If the site carries advertising or a sponsor message, it is labeled as such and kept outside the directory listings. The directory is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated on behalf of any government agency. Program names, eligibility rules and application steps belong to the agencies; this directory only points to them.

Organizations that publish resource lists are welcome to link here. Copy the snippet below onto your resources page.
